Restylane

Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid. It was FDA-approved in 2003 for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, the lines between the nose and mouth. Upon being injected beneath the skin’s surface, the gel adds natural volume and lift to smooth wrinkles and folds. Restylane integrates into dermal tissue then attracts and binds to water molecules to help maintain volume. Restylane is gradually degraded by the body’s own mechanism and disappears without any residue. Results can be seen immediately following treatment and last six months, or even longer.

DO IT YOURSELF VS IN OFFICE BEAUTY TREATMENTS: WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
With so many at-home versions of popular dermatologist-performed treatments available today, it would seem that it’s perfectly acceptable to take skin-related matters into your own hands. Sure, there are plenty of over-the-counter creams and serums that can deliver results for the right patient, but we can’t believe all the hype that product companies use to promote and sell their products. With that said, the choice is ultimately yours, but it’s my job to emphasize the importance of medical supervision, especially when it comes to treating sensitive or problematic skin.

EASY ON THE EYES
Dark circles, droopy lids and deepening wrinkles, oh MY! You may feel perky, but if your eyes look droopy, tired and sad, your whole demeanor can appear fatigued, depressed and old—all characteristics that appear on the daily “don’t” list. Unlike other facial imperfections, which can be camouflaged with artful makeup, problem areas around eyes are tougher to hide, says cosmetic and laser surgeon Monika Kiripolsky, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Carlsbad, Calif.

SO LONG SCARS. HELLO BEAUTIFUL!
In the world of cosmetic surgery, sometimes less is more, and often a sense of beauty comes from solving a smaller, surface issue—fixing unsightly scars or discolored skin—rather than from reshaping a nose or breasts. In the case of scars, a patient is hoping not to augment their appearance but simply to reclaim it—to be made “whole” again.

THE ART OF AGE DEFIANCE
It’s a harsh fact of life: Every day the clock ticks and we grow older. If you’ve been vigilant about sunscreen over the years and blessed with good genes, you probably look age-appropriate (or even younger than your years). But before you get glum, look on the bright side—today there’s a myriad of dermatological procedures that can ward off deeper wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots and sags for a few more years (at least until you’re ready to show them).

WINDOWS TO THE SOUL
If you happened to catch Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet” tour last summer, chances are you were instantly spellbound. Not by her song, dance or risqué new fashion, but by her eyes, literally shimmering beneath upper lids sprinkled with crushed, flawless diamonds. As the fifty-something diva knows so well, the eye area is the first place people focus on when they look at you. Because the skin surrounding the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate in our bodies, it’s typically the first place to show signs of aging. Whereas the Material Girl can easily pick up the tab for bejeweled eyes, however, for others the reality eventually hits you: There is no cream, lotion or magic potion that can completely reverse the signs of aging around the eyes. That’s when prevention tips, tricks and techniques morph into “procedures.”
